Hampton University
The participating middle school students will conduct small scale laboratory experiments focusing on geometrical optics, spectrum analysis and magnetism during the first two days of the program. Undergraduate and graduate students from Historically Black Colleges will provide additional peer-mentoring.
Jefferson Lab
Middle school students, along with undergraduate mentors, will spend a day at JLab emgaged in exciting lab experiences that focus on electricity and its application to energy storage. During their time, they will also have the opportunity to meet and engage with scientists working at the Lab.
Norfolk State University
During the following two days, students will spend time on the NSU campus dedicated to understanding weather phenomenon, propagation of electromagnetic waves, and the construction and launch of small weather balloons into the earth atmosphere.
National Radio Astronomy Observatory
Both undergraduate and middle school students participating in the program will experience radio astronomy first-hand. Participants will engage in astronomy research, telescope observing and construction, and a variety of STEM enrichement activities throughout their experience.
